The NSW Institute of Sport [NSWIS] is high-performance sporting organisation that supports Australian athletes to become world’s best. We reach all regions of NSW with an Olympic and Paralympic training facility based at Sydney Olympic Park and high-performance hubs across NSW that provide world class daily training environments for our athletes and coaches. Our experts work in collaboration with partners within the national sporting system to create and deliver high performance services and environments to prepare athletes and coaches for international competition.

 

About the role

NSWIS is seeking several suitable candidates for a up to 12-month unpaid placement opportunity to work within the NSWIS Sports Science department.


The internships will be primarily based at Sydney Olympic Park with the opportunity to embed within specific NSWIS sports programs; however, opportunities may present for work to be undertaken at any of our satellite training centres or facilities including our Narrabeen hub. The time commitment per week will vary as there will be planned intensive periods and other quieter times based on sport program training and competition commitments, but on average the internships will require availability for between 10-14 hours per week for ongoing tasks and support.

 

This is a fantastic opportunity for university students to apply theoretical knowledge and skills they have learnt and be part of an elite high-performance sport environment. NSWIS Sports Science staff will work with successful applicants to further develop their practical skills and under guidance from staff, provide exposure to working with athletes, coaches and staff during training and competition.

 

This is a significant opportunity to gain valuable experience in High Performance Sport, so successful candidates are expected to:

  • Be passionate about improving athlete performance,
  • Be driven and show initiative,
  • Have excellent attention to detail,
  • Have some flexibility around required workdays.

 

Essential Requirements

  • Current First Aid and CPR Certificates
  • Current Working with Children Check (WWCC)
  • Experience in the provision and application of exercise prescription with an understanding of high-performance sport.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with others including athletes, coaches and support staff.

 

Strength and Conditioning roles x3

  • 3rd Year Undergrad or Currently enrolled in Masters of Strength and Conditioning
  • Currently enrolled in ASCA L2, or completing L1
  • Previous coaching experience

 

Performance Analysis x1 and Biomechanics roles x2

  • Currently enrolled in, or have recently completed, third year of undergraduate study in an Exercise / Sport Science Degree
  • Availability to support outside regular working hours, including early mornings and afternoon/evenings

 

Physiology roles x2

  • Availability to support consistent days week-to-week
  • Currently enrolled in, or recently completed the third year of an undergraduate Exercise/Sport Science degree.
  • Proficient in data management or a strong interest to learn.

 

Desirable (any of the following is advantageous):

  • Own car/transport
  • ESSA student membership
  • Advanced Microsoft Office 365 skills (Excel, Word, Powerpoint etc)
  • Knowledge of other sport science related software (Dartfish, SportsCode, R etc)
